What is a renewal window?
A renewal window (or switching window) is the period before your business electricity contract ends when you can switch supplier without paying exit fees. Once you enter this window, your supplier cannot charge you for leaving early.
Typical renewal window lengths
Windows vary by supplier and contract. Common lengths:
- 30 days — the minimum many suppliers offer before contract end
- 60 days — common for standard business contracts
- 90 days — gives time to compare and lock in a new rate
- 120 days — often seen on longer or larger business contracts
Your exact window is in your contract or on your renewal letter. If you are not sure, ask your current supplier or check your last bill. For the full process, see our guide on how to switch electricity supplier.
What happens if you miss the renewal window?
If your contract ends and you have not switched:
- You may roll onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which are usually much higher
- You might be moved onto an automatic rollover contract at new (often worse) terms
- You lose the chance to switch without exit fees until the next window
Missing the window is one of the costliest mistakes in business energy. Comparing and switching inside the window protects you.
Examples
- 60-day window, contract ends 1 June: From 2 April you can switch without exit fees. Aim to have a new contract agreed by mid-May so the switch completes on time.
- 90-day window, contract ends 1 December: From 2 September you can leave early without penalty. Use September–October to compare and lock in a rate for December start.
